Notes apps are wonderful at capture — they're already in your pocket, they search instantly, and jotting a recipe takes ten seconds. Where they fall short is the last mile: a note is not a book. There's no layout, no table of contents, no path to paper, and the folder labeled 'recipes to organize someday' stays exactly that. If all you need is a searchable pile, a Notes app is honestly enough. If the pile is supposed to become something your family keeps, it isn't.
Design tools can produce a genuinely beautiful cookbook, and they give you total creative control — every font, every photo crop, every page exactly as you want it. The catch is that you become the typesetter: each page is laid out by hand, consistency across forty recipes is your job, and fixing a typo in a finished spread means opening the project again. Expect many evenings, not one Sunday. If you love designing, it's a pleasure. If you love cooking, it's homework.
Photo-book services do gorgeous printing and binding — thick paper, rich color, a spine that looks at home on a shelf. But they print what you hand them; they don't help you make it.
